When the four women begin traveling to one another’s worlds, their preconceptions on gender and identity are forever challenged. Librarian Jeannine is waiting for marriage in a past where the Depression never ended, Janet lives on a utopian Earth with an all-female population, Joanna is a feminist in the 1970s, and Jael is a warrior with claws and teeth on an Earth where male and female societies are at war with each other. Russ provides a critique of gender hierarchy through her parodic representation of life on Joanna’s world, the alienated characterization of Jeannine, the utopian separatist vision of Janet’s. Widely acknowledged as Joanna Russ’s masterpiece, The Female Man is the suspenseful, surprising, darkly witty, and boldly subversive chronicle of what happens when Jeannine, Janet, Joanna, and Jael-all living in parallel worlds-meet. Four alternate selves from radically different realities come together in this “dazzling” and “trailblazing work” ( The Washington Post).

Little does she know that the twin she nearly does in the shadowed corners is actually Duane (and if that weren't icky enough, he knows that she thinks he's his brother and doesn't tell her). So when one of the twins decides to cop a feel and then more than a feel, she naturally assumes it's Beau and just rolls with it. Jessica - I mean the Jessica of this book, Jessica James (not to be confused with the far more awesome Jessica Jones) - has been in love with Beau her whole life. Beau is the Elizabeth Wakefield of the two: friendly, sociable, intelligent, good ol' boy, whereas Duane is the Jessica Wakefield: moody, sarcastic, mean-spirited, and selfish. They are identical twins, although with opposite personalities. and the Women Who Want to Do Them." The most defining idea I found present in Sappho’s fragments was beauty through a woman’s eyes. It was a common question in class of should we even be allowed to assume Sappho’s meaning? After re-reading Sappho’s fragments a couple of times and trying to connect meaning through the poems I found I do not have to fill in the blanks but rather pick out a common theme that stuck out to me. The missing fragments forced me to create my own ideas of what belongs in those blanks, which is very difficult to do. My first attempt at the reading register for Tuesday was difficult because of the layout of the text. Of course, his very clever and determined wife, plus his "nerdy" little brother, help in their ways too. Not strong in body, but clever in mind, he follows the clues, questions men and women on both sides - sometimes getting beaten to the pulp in the process - to clear his best friend's name, save his life and stop a war. The killer must be found, be it Athenian or Spartan and our hero, a young crime investigator was given the task. Sacred Games by Gary Corby Is one fantastic read! I was drawn into the story immediately, easily caught up in the excitement, intrigue, and frightfully dangerous sports and altercations Set at the Olympic Games in Olympia itself when Athenians, Spartans and all of Helles (Greece) competed for the coveted victor's crowns - some to their death - a murder is committed that could lead to all out war for Helles. There is a funny, knowing riff on what it feels like to arrive in New York for the first time a lyrical meditation on how the city is transformed by an unexpected rain shower and a wry look at the ferocious battle that is commuting. Whitehead's style is as multilayered and multifarious as New York itself: Switching from third person, to first person, to second person, he weaves individual voices into a jazzy musical composition that perfectly reflects the way we experience the city. Colson Whitehead conveys with almost uncanny immediacy the feelings and thoughts of longtime residents and of newcomers who dream of making it their home of those who have conquered its challenges and of those who struggle against its cruelties. A masterful evocation of the city that never sleeps, The Colossus of New York captures the city's inner and outer landscapes in a series of vignettes, meditations, and personal memories. Here is a literary love song that will entrance anyone who has lived in - or spent time - in the greatest of American cities. Fully 50% of ministers do not last 5 years in the ministry and only 10% of pastors actually retire as ministers. The statistics for survival in the ministry suggest that it is far from a comfortable experience. Most evangelicals do not go into the ministry to be comfortable. It also fails to address the fact that, at some level, professionalism in the ministry is a positive good! While this advice is good as far as it goes, it misses the point that ALL Christians have a radical call to follow Christ and seek His glory instead of our own comfort (1 Corinthians 10:31 Matthew 16:24-25). The subtitle of the book explains his thesis: “A Plea to Pastors for a Radical Ministry.” A desire to be comfortable and to have a nice career is incompatible with the radical call to follow Christ. 26 February 2015 / Ministers / Richard Holdeman A Professional MinistryĪ number of years ago John Piper famously wrote, “We pastors are being killed by the professionalizing of the pastoral ministry… The more professional we long to be, the more spiritual death we will leave in our wake” ( Brothers, We Are Not Professionals, 2002). |
